This is an opportunity to join a progressive department situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland. We are seeking a HCPC registered BMS or trainee BMS who will contribute to development of the service. We provide a comprehensive Microbiology service to clinicians throughout the NHS Highland area; specimens for the Scottish Toxoplasma Reference Laboratory and a specialist service for Lyme disease are also received from other health boards.

The department is divided into 3 sections: Culture (comprising bacterial culture, antibiotic sensitivity, antigen detection), Molecular (bacteria and virus [including toxoplasma cell culture]) and Serology (comprising bacterial and viral serology, Parasitology [Scottish Toxoplasma Reference Laboratory/ Specialist Service for Lyme Disease] and Immunology tests). Preference will be given to candidates from a Microbiology background.

The post involves rotation in all sections according to the needs of the service and participation in the staff rota to include an extended working day, weekend and public holidays as required by the department. After training and appropriate competence assessment the successful candidate will also be required to join the on-call rota.

Applicants must be HCPC registered (BMS) or provide evidence of a degree acceptable to the IBMS (trainee BMS). Agenda for Change annex 21 will apply to candidates not yet HCPC registered. You should have extensive experience of practical laboratory work including following written protocols and procedures. You must possess excellent communication skills both oral and written and be fully computer literate.
