CONSULTANT IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE1.0 WTE

Make no assumptions, and find out for yourself why this excellent opportunity should not be ignored! This is your chance to join a great team and live and work in one of the most beautiful parts of the World The Highlands. Great for the outdoor enthusiast of all interests and levels; perfect for families; and weather which is a lot better than you might want to believe.

NHS Highland wishes to appoint a Consultant in Emergency Medicine to maintain the high quality of the Service and the consultant rota. Although being offered as an option up to 1.0 WTE enquiries from those wishing to work less than 1.0WTE are very welcome.

Including this 1.0WTE post, there will be 7 consultants representing 6.2 WTE delivering 1:7 on call. Meanwhile, based on a strong and positive working relationship with our management team, we anticipate further expansion within the near future.

This post is based in Raigmore Hospital - the principal Emergency Department in the Highlands providing services directly to the population of Inverness and the surrounding area. Together with several smaller rural general and community hospitals the population served is around 236,000. We see just under 40,000 patients p.a. offering a stimulating case mix covering all age ranges and presentations. Due to our size and geographical location (covering over 10,000 square miles) we have minimal bypass of patients and are therefore not only the secondary receiving unit for the peripheral units but also the Regional Trauma Unit for the Highlands. The combination of mountains, lakes, long roads, snowy winters and internationally sought scenic drives ('North Coast 500') means this is not only a tourist 'Mecca' but also results in the highest ratio of major trauma and largest proportion of high speed RTCs presenting to any trauma receiving unit in Scotland. Consistent with that exposure there is potential opportunity for interested and suitably qualified applicants to work with regional pre-hospital and retrieval services noting that the Pre-hospital Immediate Care Team (PICT) is located within the Emergency Department. We have colleagues with primary care qualifications and would very much welcome applicants with other specialty interests e.g. paediatrics.

We have a modern 1000 sq metre, Emergency Department with a 4-bedded resuscitation area; overhead gantry X-ray; 11 treatment and examination rooms; and a dedicated paediatric waiting area/treatment rooms. There is 24/7 access to CT. We have excellent and friendly working relationships with other services within the hospital and across Highland. The primary care 'out-of-hours' service is co-located with some integration of provision of medical care (with dedicated staffing).

As a department we have a strong educational record and working here offers excellent opportunities for involvement at every level. We are variously instructors in ALS, APLS, EPLS, ATLS, ETC and GIC and count one of the Associate Directors for Medical education in our numbers. We support 4th and 5th year undergraduates rotating from Aberdeen and others on elective from Dundee and elsewhere. We are all Supervisors for our own GPST and ACCS trainees and EM Higher specialist trainees. The department will shortly be supporting the introduction of graduate entry medical students (ScotGEM).

The department is a designated major accident and radiation incident centre and has dedicated decontamination facilities. Further information on NHS Highland and its facilities can be found at www....
