This is an opportunity to join a progressive department situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland. We are seeking two HCPC registered BMS with IBMS Specialist portfolio in Medical Microbiology or Virology who will contribute to development of the service. We provide a comprehensive Microbiology service to clinicians throughout the NHS Highland area; specimens for the Scottish Toxoplasma Reference Laboratory and a specialist service for Lyme disease are also received from other health boards.

The department is divided into 3 sections: Culture (comprising bacterial culture, antibiotic sensitivity, antigen detection), Molecular (bacteria and virus [including toxoplasma cell culture]) and Serology (comprising bacterial and viral serology, Parasitology [Toxoplasma and Lyme disease Reference Laboratories] and Immunology tests). The post involves extended working day, weekend and public holidays as required by the department , and participation in the out-of-hours on-call service.

Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist: Applicants must be HCPC registered, have specialist portfolio and current experience working in Bacteriology or Virology (band 6).

Applicants without necessary qualifications may be appointed at band 5 subject to qualifications ultimately progressing to band 6 on completion:

Band 5 Biomedical Scientist: must be HCPC registered (BMS)

Band 5 annex 21 trainee Biomedical Scientist: must provide evidence of a degree acceptable to the IBMS.

For band 5 appointments you should have extensive experience of practical laboratory work including following written protocols and procedures. You must possess excellent communication skills both oral and written and be fully computer literate.

A post with Annex 21 applied is paid a percentage of the fully qualified rate during the period of training as follows:- Year 1: 65% of the pay band maximum; Year 2: 70% of the pay band maximum, Year 3: 75% of the pay band maximum. The period of training will be dependent on qualifications. Should you fail to achieve any part of your training schedule the duties of your post may be revised.
